Horse riding is the activity Malawi has been waiting for
There’s a big chance that horse riding has been on your bucket list for years. You’ve seen the movies where cowboys ride into the sunset, or where a cute couple enjoys a romantic moment in the stables.
You know you shouldn’t expect life to be the same as in those movies, but you can’t stop thinking about the thrill of riding a horse. You’ve been dreaming about it for so long. And now you can finally have this amazing experience right here in Malawi!
Our horseback riding is a great thing to do around Lilongwe
There aren’t many horses in Malawi, and even less places where you can go riding as a visitor.
Now you don’t have to look any further. Come to Horseback Adventures at Kuti Wildlife Reserve in Salima. The drive takes you only 1.5 hour from Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital. Perfect for a day trip and even better for an overnight escape from town. The famous Lake Malawi is only 30 minutes away, so you can conveniently combine a visit to Bush and Beach.
Kuti Wildlife Reserve is one of the country’s most special places, and an unmatched location for horse riding in Malawi. This 2000 ha protected area doesn’t have any predators or other dangerous wildlife, making it suitable to explore the bush on foot, mountain bike and of course on horseback.
We welcome visitors with any level of horse riding experience!
Meet some of Malawi’s wildlife during a Horseback Safari
The Reserve we operate in doesn’t have any dangerous wildlife. So it’s ideal for horse riding and family getaways!
So what are the wildlife species we do have at Kuti?
First of all there’s Ginny, the famous giraffe. You have to be lucky to find her though, as she can be shy at times. More commonly seen are the striped cousins of our horses; zebras. You might also encounter wildebeests and a number of antelope species, such a waterbucks, nyalas, impalas, bushbucks, elands, duikers and the stunning sables, which are Kuti’s pride.
Don’t forget to look for the 250 bird species that have been recorded at Kuti. From the tiny Burnt-necked Eremomela to the impressive Martial Eagle.
All while exploring some of the country’s greatest variety of natural landscapes. The open grasslands, dense forests and wetlands will certainly take your breath away. Especially when you see it all under a blanket of Malawi’s warm sunset colours!
This is what others say about their experience
Amazing experience, definitely worth a visit!
Kuti wildlife reserve is such a wonderful place run by great people. We went on their horse riding tour of the reserve which was a lovely experience with stunning views – both of landscapes and animals! Howard was such a great guide and the horses were in great condition, and knew exactly what their job was. I would 100% recommend.
So, why would you book with us?
- Happy and healthy horses: Our horses really are part of the family. Their well-being and safety are always a priority. One of the reasons we ask you to book in advance, is because we sometimes have to give the horses a day off to relax. Or to get a nice ‘’pedicure’’ from the farrier. All horses are well-trained, friendly, and genuinely enjoy taking you on the adventure of a lifetime.
- Expert guides: Our guides have been working with horses for years. Not because it’s their job, but because they truly love it. They know the Reserve like the back of their hand and will look after you with a big smile on their face.
- Close to Lilongwe: We operate at Kuti Wildlife Reserve in Salima, only 1.5 hours’ drive from the capital and 30 minutes from the famous Lake Malawi.
- Small groups: We go out with a maximum of only six riders at a time. This guarantees the best personal and safe experience. We love making new friends on the rides!
- The only place in Malawi to go game viewing on horseback: Nowhere else in the country can you go horse riding in between wildlife. Although we can’t promise what you’re going to see, it’s an unforgettable way to enjoy a Safari!
