Frequently Asked Questions about Horse Riding at Kuti Wildlife Reserve

What can I expect when I book a Horseback Safari?

Horseback riding is a real bucket list activity, especially in such beautiful natural surroundings! If you’re lucky, you might come across zebras, nyalas, sables, wildebeests, a giraffe and other non-dangerous wildlife species. You will try to find them in Kuti’s forests, on the open grasslands and around the wetland areas. Don’t forget to also look for more than 250 bird species that call Kuti home. Along the way, your passionate guide explains some fun and interesting things about the Reserve and its inhabitants.

So, the wildlife at Kuti is not going to hurt me?
Not at all, they are very calm and relaxed. Especially when you approach them on horseback. They are all used to each other and the guides are very knowledgeable about their behaviour. Safety always comes first, so please follow the instructions at all times. We do, however, always ask you to sign an indemnity form before going on the activity. Kindly remember that participating is at your own risk.
Do I need to have horse riding experience?
No, we have different horses for any level of riding experience. Even if it’s your first time, you are very welcome to enjoy this unforgettable nature activity!
However, we unfortunately can’t take children younger than 6 on a Horseback Safari. To guarantee our horses’ safety and well-being, we also have a weight limit of 90kg per person. And hopefully needless to say, but please don’t drink and ride…
What do I need to bring and wear?
We provide riding helmets for safety. You need to make sure you feel comfortable in your clothes. It’s best if you wear natural colours that blend in with nature. Certainly nothing bright or white (also because it’s dusty or muddy!). Preferably long, stretchy pants in which you can easily move. Pockets with zips are ideal to avoid anything falling out during the ride. Wear closed shoes without too much profile / grip. Something like sneakers. Definitely don’t wear high heels during the ride.
Remember this is an outdoor activity, so stay protected from sunburn by wearing long sleeves and / or apply sun lotion. It’s possible to wear a cap under your riding helmet. You might also want to apply insect repellent.
Don’t forget to bring your phone or a camera for amazing photo opportunities!
How many people can ride together?
We can accommodate a maximum of 6 riders at the same time. If you are with more people, we can split the group. The ones who are waiting, are welcome to explore around or relax with a drink or a meal in Kuti Wildlife Reserve’s Mbidzi Café.
Are there other things to do besides horse riding?
Yes! Kuti Wildlife Reserve is a great escape from town and also has a variety of trails to explore on foot or mountain bike. You can go for a self-drive safari or ask one of the guides to join you. Kuti has a restaurant to quench your thirst and hunger, and we strongly recommend to spend the night in one of their accommodation options to make the most of your time here.
How are the roads to get there?
The drive takes you only about 1.5 hours from Lilongwe, or 30 minutes when you come from the Lake in Senga Bay. The entrance gate into Kuti Wildlife Reserve is after a 7 km dirt road from the main road, and then another 2 km to the reception area. We maintain this last part as well as we can, but please keep in mind that small or low vehicles might face challenges in the raining season. During the dry months all cars can make it, as long as you take it easy on the bumpy parts. You’re always welcome to contact us for the most up to date information.
How much does it cost?

We have different fixed time slots at various rates, to offer everyone an experience that suits. Bookings are essential to avoid any disappointments. Please visit our Rates and Times page to have a look at the available options.

This is what others say about their experience

Loved the Horseback Safari

Loved the Horseback Safari. It allows you to have a much closer interaction with the wildlife without disturbing them. You can see parts of the park that are more difficult to get to on foot or bike and impossible to get to by vehicle.
